Taking the traditional and putting a twist on it

- Danny Atehortua and Shirley Atehortua

Arepalicious first started off as something we did as a hobby at home. My wife loves to cook and she would cook for friends and family. In 2013 we decided to take her cooking to the streets and sell at food markets such as the Queens Night Market and Vendy Plaza. Our dream finally came true when a location shut down and went on sale. We were able to get our hands on it. Arepalicious Restaurant and Bakery has been open since 2018.

Meet

The Chef

I was born in Medellin, Colombia and my wife was born in Bogota, Colombia. I came here in 1992 when Colombia was a dangerous place at the age of 12. I finished school and got a job as a deckhand on the ferry to the Statue of Liberty. My wife always made arepas growing up. In 2013 we started to sell them to the public. The key is that we boil and grind our own corn which most people don't do.
